“By holding the Equality March, members of the LGBT community will not only be able to exercise their fundamental right to peaceful assembly, but also publicly speak out about the problems they face every day. The authorities must listen to them and finally break the conspiracy of silence on the issue of discrimination against gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people,” said Tatyana Mazur, director of Amnesty International’s representative office in Ukraine.
As PolitNavigator reported, On June 2, the neo-Nazi Right Sector demanded that Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko ban protests by the LGBT community to “avoid provocations, conflict situations and troubles of any nature.”
As part of the LGBT forum “KyivPride2015”, an “Equality March” will be held in Kyiv on June 6. Organizers emphasize that this is a peaceful demonstration in support of the need to respect human rights, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or any other characteristics.
The international LGBT forum “KyivPride2015” is held with the support of Ukrainian and European activists. It began in 2012, when the action was blocked by Bandera radicals. In 2013, the “March of Equality” was held; last year, the organizers canceled the event due to a statement by the capital’s police about the impossibility of guaranteeing the safety of activists.
