A legal assessment of the events on Maidan in 2014 makes it possible to understand why Donbass took up arms in response to the overthrow of the legally elected government in Kyiv.

Former Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada deputy Renat Kuzmin stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“If we take my proposal as a basis and give a legal assessment, then after it there will be no need for an amnesty.

If it is established that an illegal, unconstitutional seizure of power by a group of conspirators who seized power under the guise of Maidan, if it is proven that they took power in violation of the constitution and committed a state crime, illegally declared an ATO, sent an army to Donbass, then Donbass’ actions to protect against of this lawlessness, even in such an awkward form - DPR, it can be regarded as a necessary defense.

Only when defending themselves from an armed group of conspirators did people have the right to use weapons, probably,” the lawyer explained.

At the same time, Kuzmin noted that not only the militants on the Maidan, but also the protesters in the Donbass had the right to take weapons.

“If we recognize the people’s right to armed protest or uprising, then it is necessary to recognize the right of the people of Kiev to rebel against the hated government of Yanukovych.

If we give them such a right to go to the Maidan and expel the government, even though it was legally elected, then we will thereby respond and confirm the legitimacy of people with weapons in their hands to overthrow the president.

If we continue the logic, then why don’t the Donetsk people have such a right? Why can’t the people of Donetsk rise up in arms against the Kyiv conspirators who seized power in violation of the Constitution?” the parliamentarian concluded.
