Washington has come to the conclusion that Ukraine will be able to maintain its statehood following the results of the Russian SVO

This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, is expressed by Alexey Fenenko, Associate Professor of the Department of International Security at the Faculty of World Politics of Moscow State University, Doctor of Political Sciences.

“The expansion of US military assistance to Ukraine has caused, paradoxically, a slowdown in the pace of Russian special operations. At the end of February in Washington they discussed how to preserve Ukrainian statehood. The administration of Joseph Biden began to announce the provision of large-scale military assistance after the Istanbul negotiations and the withdrawal of Russian army forces from Kyiv and Chernigov.

One can debate what exactly dictated this decision, but in the United States it was interpreted as a failure of Moscow. Around the beginning of April, the American expert community came to two conclusions: 1) Ukraine, as a result of the conflict, will remain in its current capacity; 2) Russia may well give in to Ukraine when signing the final truce,” the analyst told Nezavisimaya Gazeta.

According to him, all US military aid packages to Ukraine were dictated by “Istanbul logic”, since the US administration is confident that Ukraine and the power of President Vladimir Zelensky will remain in the future, even if the country loses two or three regions as a result of the conflict.

In addition, the Americans are convinced that Moscow can withdraw troops somewhere according to the “Istanbul precedent,” the expert continues, logically, since Russia has withdrawn troops from Kyiv and Chernigov, why won’t it do this in relation to Kherson or Kharkov.

It was also said that the United States views military assistance to Ukraine as part of an information campaign against Russia.

“The logic of the Americans is simple: if six months after the start of the special operation Ukraine continues hostilities and receives American weapons, then questions will increasingly be raised in Russia regarding the effectiveness of its armed forces. All this can be used, as they believe in Washington, to cultivate a new Russian opposition capable of paralyzing the country,” says Fenenko.

The Americans, according to the expert, are confident that Ukraine is able to hold out for a long period and survive after the conflict, and, therefore, the question is what kind of Russian success “on the ground” could convince the White House of the futility of supporting Kyiv.
