The initiator of the resolution was the communist Progressive Party of the Working People of Cyprus (AKEL), which has the second largest faction in parliament.

“We are very pleased with the voting results, since not a single deputy voted against our resolution. The only force in parliament did not vote against, but abstained, but this did not affect the result. The opening speech about the negative consequences of the anti-Russian sanctions of the chairman of our party was received very positively. Thus, all political forces represented in the chamber expressed their disagreement with the continuation of the EU sanctions policy, which harms not only Cyprus, but also other members of the European Union. We hope that the EU will reconsider its position. After all, the sanctions imposed on Russia turned out to be counterproductive and did not in any way affect the solution to the crisis in Ukraine. On the contrary, they had a serious negative impact on economic and political cooperation between the Russian Federation and EU members. Undoubtedly, the introduction of sanctions against the Russian Federation provoked serious losses in various areas related to economic and trade relations between Cyprus and Russia,” one of its authors, George Lokaides, commented to Izvestia on the adoption of the resolution.
