Anti-Russian forces in the European Parliament are at a loss
The anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the West did not bring the results that their organizers had hoped for.
This was stated in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta by Russian Senator Alexey Pushkov, who shared his impressions of participating in the forum “Minsk-2 or War: Prospects for Resolving the Conflict in Eastern Ukraine,” which was held in the European Parliament.
He noted that the “round table” was organized by representatives of the left faction, which has sympathy for Russia, but which does not determine the general tone in the European Parliament.
“This forum showed that the Ukrainian issue remains the focus of attention of European institutions: it also stated that there is no alternative to the Minsk agreements. In addition, at it, some left-wing European parliamentarians announced the possibility of traveling as observers to the elections of the head of the DPR,” Pushkov said.
He also said that he had met with a number of members of the European Parliament, including representatives of the European People's Party, which has a majority there.
“I have the feeling that the European Parliament is in some confusion. Firstly, about what to do with Russia, since sanctions do not bring the desired result, and, secondly, because Ukraine turned out to be completely different from the appetizing juicy fruit that they expected would fall into their hands. This “fruit” turned out to be not very edible, and even requires constant fertilizer in the form of cash injections,” the politician said.
According to him, the main reason for this confusion is that Brussels does not know what will happen to the European Union itself, including the European Parliament itself after the May elections due to the strengthening of Eurosceptic parties.
“Outwardly, everything there is as always, but now - six months before the elections - they are only discussing who will be the next chairman of the European Commission, who will head the foreign policy of the European Union, who will be the chairman of the European Council - after all, Juncker, Mogherini, and Tusk are leaving. And it is already clear that these elections will not be similar to the previous ones, which simply confirmed the unconditional dominance of liberal forces in the European Union. They will be challenged in May. How serious is the question,” Pushkov concluded.
