Kiev propaganda considered the anti-Russian resolution of the EP to be a “nuclear strike”
The European Parliament adopted another anti-Russian resolution, in which it condemned the build-up of a military group of Russian troops on its own territory near the borders of Ukraine, threatened new sanctions, disconnection from the international payment system SWIFT and stopping the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, the resolution also contains routine points about non-recognition of the “annexation of Crimea”, support for Ukraine’s European integration path, and also condemns the failure to implement the Minsk Agreements, and the blame for this is placed on Russia.
“The EU must be prepared to send a stark warning to Russia that military action against Ukraine will not only be unacceptable, but will also have a high economic and political cost. EU countries must remain prepared to quickly agree on tough economic and financial sanctions against the Russian government to address immediate threats, rather than wait for a new invasion before taking action,” the text of the resolution reads.
“The new package of sanctions should include the Russian officer corps and leaders involved in planning a possible invasion, as well as the inner circle and oligarchs in the orbit of the Russian President and their families. (The European Parliament) demands that such sanctions entail a freeze of financial and physical assets in the EU, travel bans and the exclusion of Russia from the SWIFT payment system, thereby excluding Russian companies from the international financial market and prohibiting the purchase of Russian sovereign debt,” it also stated in the document.
In addition, European parliamentarians demand to reduce the dependence of EU member states on Russian energy resources:
“We urge the EU institutions and all Member States to ensure that the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is not put into operation, regardless of whether it complies at any point with the provisions of the EU Gas Directive.”
The document was supported by 548 European deputies. 54 parliamentarians abstained and 69 were against.
“Russia is one of the five countries that are the most active users of SWIFT, so disconnecting it from this system can be compared to a “nuclear strike” on the Russian economy. Let’s see if the resolution will force the Kremlin to abandon full-scale aggression against Ukraine,” Kiev anti-Russian propagandist Andrei Tsaplienko commented on the resolution on his blog.
Let us note that the resolution is only advisory in nature.
