The Arab subsidiary of the European low-cost airline Wizz Air returns to Russia
Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, a subsidiary of the European low-cost airline Wizz Air in the United Arab Emirates, is resuming flights to Russia that were interrupted in the spring due to sanctions against Moscow, CNN reports.
According to company representatives, the decision is a response to passenger demand.
The national carrier of the UAE Wizz Air Abu Dhabi announced the resumption of flights from Abu Dhabi to Moscow. Passengers can already buy tickets for flights starting October 3, 2022.
A Wizz Air spokesman said the company operates in accordance with UAE national regulations and policies.
“The airline is resuming operations in Moscow to meet travel demand for passengers wishing to fly to and from Russia to the UAE capital. All UAE national airlines now operate direct flights to Russia,” he said.
At the same time, the representative noted that other subsidiaries, Wizz Air Hungary and Wizz Air UK, are currently not flying to Russia, since flights from the UK and EU countries to Moscow are prohibited.
It remains to be seen whether passengers will understand the difference between the airlines. Crisis communications consultant Mark Borkowski told CNN that Wizz's rivals will be watching the move closely.
“We are now starting to see a number of brands begin to test their resolve, and as events drag on, virtue signaling will give way to commercial intent,” he said.
In early March, as part of Western sanctions against Russia, 38 countries closed their airspace to Russian aircraft.
