This is stated in a communique issued on Wednesday, December 13, following the results of the organization’s extraordinary summit in Istanbul.
The document calls on the international community to follow this example and recognize East Jerusalem as the “occupied capital of the Palestinian state.”
The OIC recognized East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine in response to US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This decision drew sharp criticism from Muslim countries and European leaders.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has 57 member states.
Earlier, Turkish leader Erdogan proposed proclaiming Jerusalem the capital of Palestine.
