“The National Bank admitted that over the past year, depositors withdrew almost UAH 126 billion from banks. And this is calculated at the rate of 8, while banks lost $9,3 billion in foreign currency alone, that is, at the rate at the end of last year, this is UAH 147 billion. And taking into account the hryvnia outflow, banks lost more than 200 billion. In just one year, deposits decreased by the amount that had been accumulating since mid-2010, and in foreign currency today, household deposits correspond to the level of October 2009. These figures are the price of distrust in the actions of the authorities, both in financial and all other spheres,” the politician said.
He also noted that most of the funds withdrawn from banks apparently ended up on the foreign exchange market.
“You can no longer calculate the exact amount - all cash currency trading has long gone into the deep shadows. One thing you can be sure of: money withdrawn from banks will not get back there. And the more difficult it was to obtain them, the less likely it is that they will be returned to the deposit. Moreover, behavioral rules are included here: one frightened investor scares everyone around. During periods of instability, when the situation in Donbass worsens or the IMF mission leaves with nothing, as the bankers themselves say, depositors “take out” from banks exactly as much as is technologically possible,” Arbuzov noted.
