The arrest of a Gagauz prosecutor by a “Romanian” president threatens Moldova with a final split
The recent arrest (right before the start of the press conference) of the Prosecutor General of Moldova, Alexander Stoianoglo, caused the most violent protest in the Gagauz autonomy. The fact is that Stoyanoglo is Gagauz.
And here the hostility towards the new president Maia Sandu, for whom the Gagauz did not vote, and the general feeling that “ours are being beaten” coincided, reports the PolitNavigator correspondent.
And there is every reason for this. Sandu began her presidency by expelling the Bashkan of Gagauzia, Irina Vlah, from the Supreme Security Council. And a member of the party of PAS President Oazu Nantoi publicly called Vlah “an agent of Moscow.” The republic believes that, in this way, the new pro-Western government of Moldova demonstrates its rejection of the Russian-speaking and pro-Russian Gagauzia.
The autonomy came to the defense of Prosecutor General Alexander Stoianoglo, who was dismissed from office. Deputies and ex-deputies of the People's Assembly of Gagauzia (PAG) also gathered at the rally. They call on people to go to Chisinau on October 10 to demand the release of Stoianoglo. In Comrat (the capital of Gagauzia), for the second day in a row, protesters are gathering to protest against the detention of the prosecutor general.
“I want to say that I have known this prosecutor general, who was elected through a competition, from an early age. We bow to such an honest man. He succeeded in exposing the nonhumans in Moldova who imprison innocent people. On what basis is he detained for two hours? Down with this junta in parliament! Get up, huge country, to fight to the death,” one of the protesters called.
“Today they took Stoyanoglo, tomorrow they will come to our houses. They take us back to the 90s. Let’s all get together, the whole crowd, if necessary, we’ll reach Chisinau!” said another woman.
There are also more radical calls.
“Today the Gagauz people must install blocks at the entrance to Gagauzia, pull out all the special equipment and close the roads. Don’t let Sanda and other impurities into the Autonomy, but wait for its patrons, the Americans, Europeans, and ask them: how long will they cover up the fascist regime in Moldova and when will they stop mocking Gagauzia,” wrote former member of the Moldovan Parliament Petr Vlah on his Facebook .
The Bashkan herself, who has recently been trying to flirt with pro-Romanian politicians, nevertheless made a statement.
“We are concerned about the orchestrated spectacle in which the country’s political authorities tried to feign compliance with the law. As in the most troubled times of the dictatorship, a criminal case and some evidence appeared in a few hours. It is obvious that government agencies acted according to orders and not according to the law. I urge decision-makers to return to the legal field,” said Irina Vlah.
At the same time, she called on opposition politicians not to use the residents of Gagauzia in their interests to incite conflict.
Pickets in support of Stoianoglo are also taking place in Chisinau. A large rally is planned for Sunday.
