Armenia and Belarus refused to sign any text if it talked about the “annexation of Crimea.” According to an anonymous diplomat from the EU, the final document will contain the EU's condemnation of the annexation of Crimea to Russia, and will also mention the position of all other countries participating in the summit, expressed by them when voting at the UN in March 2014. Then Armenia and Belarus supported Moscow’s position.
The Eastern Partnership Summit opens in Riga today, May 21. It will be attended by representatives of the EU, as well as six countries of the former USSR: Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Belarus. On Friday, following the summit, a final joint communiqué should be adopted. Today, summit participants will discuss the draft of this document.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich previously stated that Moscow will follow the summit closely, since “the fundamental thing is that the meaning of the partnership has a pronounced anti-Russian orientation.”
