Armenia is on the verge of new elections: Pashinyan was not approved as prime minister
Today's voting for the new Prime Minister of Armenia ended without results. The leader of the local Maidan and the head of the “Elk” (“Exit”) parliamentary faction Nikol Pashinyan failed on his first attempt to gain enough votes to take the post of Prime Minister of Armenia, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
At a special meeting of the National Assembly of Armenia on Tuesday, the majority of deputies (56) voted against Pashinyan’s candidacy. 45 votes were cast for him.
Pashinyan was the only candidate for the post of head of government. His candidacy was nominated on April 30 by the Yelk (Exit) faction. However, the oppositionist needed 53 votes out of 105 to be elected. Consequently, not only the “Yelk” faction, the “Tsarukyan” and “Dashnaktsutyun” bloc, which had previously expressed support for him, had to vote for him, but also some of the deputies of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia.
According to the law, new elections must take place in a week. This time, to be nominated as a candidate for prime minister in the second round, he must have the support of at least one third of the deputies - 32 parliamentarians. The voting procedure does not change.
If the prime minister is not re-elected, this automatically leads to the dissolution of the National Assembly and the holding of early elections within 40 days.
Let us remind you that Serzh Sargsyan resigned from the post of Prime Minister on April 23, after mass demonstrations. Before that, he led the country as president for ten years.
Previously “PolitNavigator” already reported that that Pashinyan threatened Armenia with a “political tsunami” if he was not confirmed as prime minister. Tens of thousands of his supporters are on duty in the square in Yerevan, awaiting orders for new protests.
