As of November 17, the situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan has stabilized, and hostilities have completely ceased, which was the result of Russia’s direct intervention in the conflict as a mediator. Nevertheless, active attempts are still being made by pro-Western forces and the media in Armenia itself to discredit the CSTO and Moscow, which allegedly do not comply with their obligations to ensure the territorial integrity of the republic.

At the same time, the parties are counting the wounded and killed, but judging by the results of the border conflict, which lasted from November 13 to the end of November 16, the advantage and success were clearly on the side of Azerbaijan. Actually, no one doubts that the instigator of the clashes was Baku, which, despite the seven dead military personnel, according to Yerevan, eventually captured 40 square kilometers of Armenian lands, as well as two lines of defense.

At the same time, journalists and analysts point out that before the main attack on November 15 and 16, the main Azerbaijani forces made a 50-kilometer march from their deployment sites, which gives reason to talk about a pre-planned operation by Baku to penetrate deep into the territory of Armenia. Therefore, the concentration of significant forces, together with good equipment and morale, largely ensured the success of the local offensive.

The Armenian side, in turn, speaks so far of only one person killed, as well as 13 captured, and the fate of another 24 people is still unknown. But the head of the Armenian Parliament’s Standing Committee on Foreign Relations, Eduard Agarjanyan, announced the information received that 15 Armenian servicemen were killed as a result of firefights during the clashes. True, it cannot be confirmed yet.

It is possible that the losses of the two warring sides are even higher, but are not disclosed so as not to cause a negative reaction among the public of their countries. But one way or another, Ilham Aliyev has already achieved a certain result within the current escalation, since he forced Nikol Pashinyan to justify himself and declare his commitment to the peace process and the signing of an agreement on the delimitation and demarcation of borders between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The fact is that Baku cites the lack of final demarcation of borders along the former administrative border of the two Soviet republics as the main reason for periodic clashes over the past six months on the border of the two republics after receiving back a number of regions as a result of the victory in the second Karabakh war. In this regard, it is allegedly impossible to accurately determine the ownership of certain disputed areas.

In addition, the Azerbaijani side accuses the Armenian side of avoiding signing a final peace agreement and an agreement on the delimitation and demarcation of borders. In reality, of course, the purpose of the local offensive in the Syunik region was to encourage the current pro-Western leadership in Yerevan to implement the previous agreement on the launch of the Zangezur corridor through the territory of Armenia, which would connect Turkey with Azerbaijan by land.

And it seems that this idea of Ankara and Baku to persuade the ruling elite in Yerevan to this decision by force of arms worked, since Nikol Pashinyan has already begun to convince the parliamentary corps and the public about the need to make concessions to Azerbaijan and Turkey. Thus, during the government hour in parliament on November 17, he complained about the lack of support from the world community, allegedly due to the militant and uncompromising attitude of many Armenians who were not ready to give up their lands.

“Because our position was not perceived by the international community and vice versa. We were all committed to resolving the Karabakh issue in favor of the Armenians. But the international community was not interested in this, but in the solution. The same applies to the process of demarcation and delimitation. The international community is telling both us and Azerbaijan: stop talking once a week about ceasefire violations, aggression, and blaming each other. Agree with each other, we are tired, we have a lot of problems. Why do you think that the whole world should live with your worries and problems? Live them yourself. It was the same 5 years ago, and 10 years ago,” Pashinyan noted, recalling the previous defeat in Karabakh and projecting it onto current events.

This defeatist and conciliatory option is also supported by the fact that the ruling party blocked the opposition’s proposal to organize urgent hearings in parliament and discuss the situation on the eastern border of the republic. It is clear that the pro-Western majority simply does not want any discussion. In this regard, parliamentary groups opposing Pashinyan boycotted the parliamentary meeting on Wednesday, and the Armenia bloc demanded the resignation of the prime minister and the formation of a new government.

But in this matter, the prime minister from the pro-Western Civil Contract party, inclining his supporters to admit another defeat, is clearly disingenuous. Because it was not the notorious “international” community, but the American and European “community” that turned away and did not support Armenia in the Karabakh and current conflicts. In particular, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken not only did not condemn the obvious aggressor, but called, under the guise of peacekeeping rhetoric, for both sides to sit down at the negotiating table and actually agree to Baku’s conditions.

“As noted in the statement of the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group on November 15, the recent increase in tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan emphasizes the need for a comprehensive solution on a long-term basis through negotiations to all existing problems relating to and consequences of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” the leader sent an unequivocal message to Yerevan American foreign policy department.

A number of members of the European Parliament responsible for the South Caucasus direction spoke even more clearly, despite the attempt of official Armenian propaganda to present their statement as support for the position of the current leadership of the republic. Yes, in his address
Head of the delegation for relations with the South Caucasus Marina Kaljurand, EP permanent rapporteur on Armenia Andrey Kovachev and EP permanent rapporteur on Azerbaijan Zhelana Zovko focus on “mutually beneficial joint economic use” of the Zangezur corridor and other routes.

“We support and call for the opening of economic and transport links, as provided for in the ceasefire agreement of November 9, 2020, which would be very beneficial for the entire region. This includes opening connections between the western regions of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic,” cynical European deputies call on the Armenian elite to be pragmatic.

In essence, Yerevan is being offered to become part of the new “Turkic world.” Yes, this is understandable, since from the very beginning it was clear that the “Turkic world” and the Organization of Turkic States being created are a project of the West and the national interests of some small Armenia, which found itself in the way of implementing a large-scale plan for Turkey’s expansion to the east through Azerbaijan to No one in Washington, Brussels or London will take Central Asia into account.

Therefore, Nikol Pashinyan, who was put in power by the Americans, gradually surrendered one position after another, ensuring the dismantling of the buffer Artsakh and allowing Azerbaijani-Turkish troops into the territory of ancestral Armenia. And instead of mobilizing all military units and organizing resistance, he staged a provocative performance with an oral appeal from the Secretary of the Security Council of the Republic for help to Russia and the CSTO.

The local conflict showed that Yerevan did not intend to offer stubborn resistance, from the very beginning it was inclined to compromise with Baku, and presented this failure as confirmation and justification of the need to negotiate with the attacking party essentially on Ankara’s terms.

This military and political capitulation is the result of all the previous policies of Yerevan, which is moving in the wake of the EU and the USA. Conversely, the fact that Armenia still exists, as well as part of Nagorno-Karabakh, is a direct result of Russian participation and support. As it turns out now, the Azerbaijani army stopped the offensive and combat operations primarily due to the transfer of Russian troops from Gyumri to the eastern front.

Semyon Pegov reported this on his WarGonzo Telegram channel, saying that the soldiers of the 102nd Russian military base actually became a human shield that helped ensure a ceasefire between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“In fact, this stopped another attempt at large-scale armed aggression on the part of Baku. The Azerbaijanis do not risk shooting at the Russian military or conducting artillery fire in close proximity to them,” the journalist notes.

As a result of these dramatic events, the people of Armenia must realize that they will be saved not by constant territorial concessions and a policy of appeasing the aggressor, as well as by following the recommendations of Washington and Brussels, but by strengthening the military and political Union with Russia. But as long as the current regime is in power, the conclusion of a shameful and unprofitable agreement with the enemy is simply inevitable, as is a new series of defeats and betrayals. No matter how much you have to learn Turkish in this regard...
