The Armenian Maidan achieved its goal - Sargsyan resigned, and the opposition leader was released
Armenian Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan resigned. The corresponding decision was officially announced on Monday, April 23, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The resignation of the head of government followed several days of mass protests in Yerevan and other cities of the country.
Starting from April 13, rallies, demonstrations and marches were carried out by the “My Step” movement, led by the head of the parliamentary faction of the “Yelk” (“Exit”) bloc Nikol Pashinyan. On Sunday, April 22, Sargsyan came to a meeting with Pashinyan, but the dialogue broke down after the oppositionist said that they had gathered here only to discuss Sargsyan’s departure. After this, the prime minister abruptly stood up and left.
An hour and a half after this incident, Pashinyan was brought in and soon detained. Protest sentiments, however, did not subside; on the contrary, they intensified even more. On Monday afternoon, Pashinyan was released, and 2 hours later Sargsyan announced his resignation as prime minister.
Sargsyan was elected head of government on April 17 this year, after two presidential terms. In accordance with the country's new constitution, which came into force on April 9, the head of government concentrates real power in the country in his hands. This was precisely the formal reason for the explosion of discontent among the opposition.
