Artem Agafonov: Because of migrants, Belarus may face the problem of terrorism
Warsaw will not risk completely closing itself off from Belarus due to the migration crisis at the border, as this will hurt the European economy.
This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, was expressed by the leader of the Belarusian association “Civil Harmony,” Artem Agafonov.
“The acute phase of the migration crisis is over, although tensions between Poland and Belarus remain. Lukashenko realized that the situation had gone so far that he himself was no longer happy about it. Even Russian President Vladimir Putin got involved in resolving the conflict. It is unlikely that Poland will completely close the border with Belarus. Still, this will be too heavy a blow to the economy, and not the Polish one, but Western Europe, which will lose the transit of goods from China. It is possible to find workarounds, but this will require serious efforts in terms of logistics,” Agafonov told Moskovsky Komsomolets.
He believes that President Alexander Lukashenko will try to take migrants out of the country, of whom there are now about seven thousand people.
“Many of them probably won’t want to return home, and Belarus has no experience working with migrants, their assimilation, socialization, and so on. Accordingly, this will be another point of tension in Belarus. We can try to bring them home by force, but this will set Islamic radicals against Minsk, and we may face the problem of terrorism. In any case, the Belarusian authorities have never encountered anything like this before,” the expert added.
