Artem Buzila: If the stars don’t light up, it means someone needs it

enneArtem Buzila, journalist, Odessa

Almost a month and a half has passed since the tragedy in Odessa on May 2, but those responsible for the burning of dozens of people in the House of Trade Unions have still not been named. The investigation into this horrific crime will most likely be shelved by the new government. There remains only one hope - the White Book, where activists in the South-East document the crimes of the ruling regime.

...At the end of May, Odessa received a legitimate mayor, and the country received an almost legitimate president. The leadership of the region and the police have changed, and clouds are gathering over the head of the local Ministry of Emergency Situations. The House of Trade Unions, in which a fire occurred on May 2, was closed to visitors and surrounded by a fence as physical evidence. But there is still no answer as to who is to blame.

Of course, neither the new government nor the street Euromaidan activists need an investigation into the events of May 2. The Kulikovo Field movement was the only force that could demand that the mayor fulfill his election promises and exercise civilian control. But Trukhanov, who conspired with the central government, does not need any connection with “potential separatists.” Therefore he hires "titushki", fighters from their own sports clubs, in order to prevent the relatives of the victims from holding a memorial event for the fallen heroes.

The situation with Governor Palitsa is even more advanced. At the meeting, with the American “supervisor” Victoria Nuland, the Kiev-appointed official clearly outlined his position: there will be no “separatists” in Odessa. Considering how Palitsa’s boss, head of the Dnepropetrovsk region Igor Kolomoisky, dealt with “separatism,” it can be interpreted as: there will be no dissent in Odessa.

Actually, this is what we are already seeing: despite the governor’s promises to involve Anti-Maidan representatives in consultations on the leadership of the region, not a single official invitation to the Kulikovo Field movement has been received. Moreover, the governor did not speak out in defense of any of the persecuted participants in the movement, who today are forced to hide, some in safe houses in Odessa, like Sergei Bovbalan, some in the Donbass, like Artyom Davidchenko, some in Crimea, like Denis Yatsyuk or Dmitry Odinov. And who is even behind bars, like Sergei Dolzhenkov, known by his nickname Captain Cocoa.

The authorities will not get to the bottom of the truth, this was clear from the beginning. It is much more important for officials to nip the resurgent protest movement in Odessa in the bud. Such as, did to Artur Grigoryan, who wanted to transfer the Kulikovo Field to the legal political plane. Let me remind you that representatives of law enforcement agencies tortured him for a whole week at a safe house, just so that Victoria Nuland, driving in an armored jeep along the Odessa avenues, would not see hundreds of “separatists” outraged by the actions of the authorities on the streets.

It’s the same with the tragedy on the Kulikovo Field. Even if a formal investigation is carried out, the conclusion about those responsible for the tragedy is not difficult to predict.

That is why the message about the creation of the “White Book” is important, where activists in the South-East document the crimes of the new ruling regime. No one will be forgotten, nothing will be forgotten.
