Avakov started his game
Behind the protests under the slogan “No surrender” is the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov, under whose command is the Azov regiment, which has become one of the main instigators of torpedoing the peace process.
Kiev political scientist Andrei Zolotarev stated this in a commentary to Izvestia, according to whom Avakov is playing a game traditional for Ukrainian politicians.
“The rules are simple: first create a problem, and then sell its solution. Avakov faces the prospect of losing his ministerial position. He strives to become indispensable for Zelensky, to show the president that he cannot cope without him. Accordingly, he creates problems for Zelensky, so that he can heroically solve them,” says the expert.
He believes that Avakov is unlikely to try to greatly shake up the situation.
“He does not have the support of Western countries. His interest lies in maintaining the status quo and establishing control over a number of interesting departments. For example, he ensured that his man, 32-year-old Vladislav Krikliy, became the Minister of Infrastructure. But the Ministry of Infrastructure is one of the few departments where real money circulates. Avakov is interested in some positions in the gas production sector. He cares not only about political positions, but also about economic dividends,” Zolotarev clarified.
In turn, the director of the Kyiv Center for Political Research and Conflictology, Mikhail Pogrebinsky, believes that it is not worth reducing the protests to a confrontation between Avakov and Zelensky.
“There is a public associated with Poroshenko, free radicals who are not part of any hierarchical system. Avakov’s game will become clear only on October 14. On this day, nationalists traditionally hold processions in honor of the formation of the UPA. Based on the mass numbers and the nature of the slogans, a lot can be understood,” Pogrebinsky sums up.
As PolitNavigator reported, after Kiev signed the “Steinmeier formula” at the negotiations in Minsk, which prescribes the procedure for granting special status to Donbass, in Ukraine right-wing radical protests began under the slogan “No surrender”.
In the end they succeeded disrupt the previously approved withdrawal of troops in agreed areas on the contact line.
Additionally, Azov militants occupied the Kiev-controlled village of Zolotoye in the Donbass, from where, according to the agreements under the Steinmeier formula, Ukrainian troops were supposed to retreat.
