Avakov got cold feet: The trip to NATO could end in the death of Ukraine
The conflict in Donbass has become frozen, which does not correspond to the interests of Ukraine. If there is no consensus in Ukrainian society regarding joining NATO, this threatens a new split and the death of the state.
Arsen Avakov, Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, stated this at the IX expert forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Minsk process played its role, today it is dead. The Minsk process in its current state does not solve Ukraine’s problems in any way. This is a situation of a protracted, frozen conflict. This is not our decision, it is not in our interests,” he said.
“Perhaps the moment has come when any negotiating position should be based on a public discussion that is accepted by the whole society. If the whole society accepts, relatively speaking, two-thirds, NATO membership, we don’t care about Putin’s opinion. We are strong with our common opinion.
If society has a discussion, there are doubts, our partners also have them, for example, then the formula for NATO membership, no matter what... to die just to become members of NATO is not interesting to me.
I am interested in Ukraine being strong, so strong that NATO dreams of being in the same bloc with it in order to repel any aggression. So that Putin understands that if he goes to all-out open war in Ukraine, his losses will be catastrophic,” Avakov said.
