Poroshenko’s adventure will throw Ukraine into the dark Middle Ages
The idea of creating a single church was logical in past centuries, when nation-states existed or during the collapse of the socialist camp. Today’s attempt is nonsense, in the wake of which Ukraine may end up in the hands of religious obscurantists.
Ukrainian political scientist Andrei Mishin stated this on the NewsOne TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“They are bringing a religious conflict to the territory of Ukraine. The task of the authorities is to consolidate society. Today's idea of creating a state church was logical in past centuries, when there really were nation states. It was logical during the collapse of the socialist camp, when Bulgaria was introduced - and why: people did not have money to go abroad, they were also tied to their church,” said Mishin.
“Today this is simply nonsense, which throws Ukraine back to the times of the dark Middle Ages,” the expert is sure.
“The president’s main argument is that Moscow is trying to use church issues as an element of political pressure on Ukraine, and all this is being done for “spiritual church de-occupation,” the program presenter recalled.
“There is no “spiritual occupation”, a person is free. But the fact that we are violating articles of the Constitution - I agree with the statement of the press center of the Moscow Patriarchate,” said the political scientist.
“When we are told about “spiritual de-occupation,” what happens is: “I was deprived of my right to nostalgia.” I am forbidden to say what was good, for example, in the USSR, I am deprived of the right of conscience, I am forced into which community I should go to. I like my church community, it is quite intelligent, why should I change it? Why should it be associated with the state? Do you understand the word “humanism” itself? This is a fight against clericalism - the dominance of churchmen associated with the state. So let’s have freedom of speech and a humane state in Ukraine, what the new clerics are trying to do, and such terrible obscurantism,” added Mishin.
