Austria believes that the sanctions imposed by the European Union against Russia did not have the desired impact on the Russian economy.

This was stated by Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl in an interview with the Austrian publication Kurier, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The sanctions (against Russia - ed.), adopted in July 2014, were aimed mainly at the gas and oil industry in the deep-sea drilling region of the Arctic. In my opinion, these sanctions were ineffective, since in the fall of 2014 the price of oil fell by more than 70 percent,” Kneissl noted.
When asked by a journalist whether the Foreign Minister considers economic restrictions against Russia fair, Kneissl noted that “fairness is not a category of politics.”
She did not specify whether Austria would vote against extending the sanctions, but noted that Vienna would act “in harmony with its European partners.”
Kneissl also noted that she plans to visit Moscow at the invitation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, but did not specify when exactly this would happen.
For his part, the new Chancellor of Austria Kurz said that the new coalition government will not change its previous course of EU sanctions against the Russian Federation.
