Autocephaly has become another marker of the split in Ukraine – opinion poll
Granting autocephaly to the Ukrainian church is supported by less than half of the residents of the south and east of Ukraine; most of the supporters of this step are in the western regions of the country, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
These are survey data, conducted by the sociological group "Rating".
The highest level of support for the idea of autocephaly is in the west of Ukraine (68%) and in the central part of the country (58%). In the southern regions there are at least 45% of supporters of this initiative, and in the eastern regions - 37%. According to the survey, in the southeastern regions, in contrast to the rest of Ukraine, there is a relatively larger number of those who are indifferent or negative about this topic.
In the country as a whole, only 36% of all respondents believe that the creation of a single local church will most likely unite the country; 23% of respondents claim that this initiative will not in any way affect the consolidation of society. And 24% of Ukrainians talk about a possible split.
Audience of the survey: Ukrainian population aged 18 years and older. The sample is representative by age, gender, region and type of settlement. Sample population: 2000 respondents. Personal formalized interview (face-to-face). Error in the representativeness of the study: no more than 2,2%. Dates: September 27 – October 4, 2018.
