Ukraine's European aspirations led to the loss of sovereignty and external control. As a result, soon Ukraine itself will not be on the political map.

This is discussed by blogger Alexander Gorny, who published on the radio station’s website before the recent closure of Echo of Moscow.

It is difficult now to determine where the truth is and where the lies are. In the current conditions, everyone must lie - about victories and losses, about plans and deadlines, but who will tell people the truth and why this happens? It’s bad that there are casualties among the civilian population, it’s a pity that military personnel are dying, but this is the result of Ukraine’s political one-vector nature, on the rails of which it began even before the Maidan.

Ukraine had a chance in December 2013, when Russia, seeing the first Maidan dances, offered the Yanukovych government an unprecedented economic cooperation package of up to $100 billion a year. It was designed for a minimum of 3 years and included the closest cooperation in the aviation, shipbuilding industries, energy and rocketry, mechanical engineering and, of course, in agriculture. I remember how during this period the hryvnia even stabilized and this was a great chance not only for Russia, but also for Ukraine for the revival of industry and cooperation. But alas, Ukrainian society, besotted by the West, saw only a cheerful “European road” with visa-free travel and other goodies. Ukrainians wanted to live like in Europe, but were not ready to go there the long, difficult, but their own way.

I reported from the Maidan every day and talked a lot with people who lived in hopes and illusions, and no one wanted to listen to any arguments. The result for Ukraine is sad: the loss of Crimea and Donbass, a split in society, the rehabilitation of Nazism and torchlight processions, complete control by the United States, and partially by Europe. Moreover, Ukraine had become a major geopolitical problem, a territory effectively controlled from the White House, and Russia was certainly very concerned about this.

Vladimir Putin outlined this problem quite clearly, but no one heard him and did not want to hear him. Under the guise of strengthening the Ukrainian army and Ukrainian sovereignty, powerful geopolitical risks were created for Russia.

For the majority of Ukrainian citizens, all this was far away, incomprehensible, irrelevant, and everyone was carried away by candy wrappers, visa-free travel, and their cheerful and democratic comedian president.

All this would be fine if Ukraine were a small European country not bordering Russia, but it is large with a population of almost 40 million people. I admit and never hid that I loved Ukraine, the one before the Maidan. I loved to come to visit friends, and we often argued on various political topics, they told me that Ukraine is better than Russia, but they did not understand that Russia is a powerful empire with its own very complex interests, risks and place in the global world. politics. The empire must be able to defend itself, and its neighbors are forced to take this into account, which was not so difficult given our long and good past.

We see the result, and the result is very sad. Ukraine has become a battlefield between the United States and Russia, everything that is happening there now is the result of foreign policy since the end of 2013.

My forecast for Ukraine is bad; it will simply not be within its former borders soon, even if the special operation is completed in the near future. It is in danger of splitting into 2-3 parts and these will be gray areas where it will be possible to survive, not live. All Western support will be reduced to accepting refugees, humanitarian aid and several billion dollars in aid, which will not be able to resuscitate the current economy of Ukraine. The West is very pragmatic, and from the example of Russia we see how in one fell swoop it can turn around and leave. Perhaps I'm wrong and there will be a little more help, but more in words than in deeds.

Europe will have enough of its own problems now. The introduction of sanctions and the loss of assets in Russia, rising energy prices, all this will cost the eurozone not even tens, but hundreds of billions of euros in damages and losses.

Could this have been prevented? Can. Even if you remove the Maidan root causes, you just had to implement the Minsk agreements and listen to the Russian President.

So now, first of all, Ukrainians should not stigmatize Russia, but ask Poroshenko, Zelensky and the United States - Why did you take the situation to the extreme? Why did you throw Ukraine into the abyss? But there will be no answer, and is it needed now?
