Azarov has become wiser in hindsight: Belarusians, do not trust the West and the Maidan activists!
Former Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov called on Belarusians not to trust their opposition, which claims that it will build good relations with Russia.
He stated this on the Belarusian ONT TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“When I hear your oppositionists say that they are for friendship with Russia, it’s all a lie. This is not why the West finances and trains them. If they manage to overthrow Lukashenko, then why does the West need a regime that will cooperate with Russia? It's all talk. They also told us the same thing on Maidan,” Azarov said.
According to him, the West wants to knock Belarus, like Ukraine before, off course towards good neighborly relations with Russia in order to use it as a market for selling its products, which are not in demand.
“When we worked in 2002 to create a single economic space of Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Belarus, we had the highest growth rates of our gross domestic product. And it's clear why. The huge market of four countries provided opportunities for business and foreign investors to count on development. As soon as the orange Maidan put an end to these plans, foreign investment fell and our own stopped. The population's incomes began to fall and the market narrowed.
Belarus is smaller than Ukraine and cannot focus only on the domestic market. You have no alternative to the Russian market. Those guys who are pushing you along the so-called European path do not understand that the world is driven by competitive interests,” Azarov said.
