Azarov told how he and Yanukovych slammed the Maidan
The government of Viktor Yanukovych in 2013 knew that the Americans were preparing a coup in Ukraine, but believed that unrest would begin during the presidential elections, and such nonsense as postponing the signing of an association with the EU could not serve as a trigger.
Former Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov stated this at a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The president and I knew that a coup was being prepared for 2015, we had information. Why 2015? Because the most convenient thing is always to carry out coups during the transfer of power, to shout that the elections are rigged... the schemes are well-known. Therefore, all the warnings that we received in the summer of 2013, we attributed to the fact that we need to seriously prepare for December 2014 and January 2015.
To be honest, I didn’t even imagine that such an absolutely working moment as the postponement of signing an agreement with the EU could serve as a trigger for these tragic events. Probably, it would have been so, because the first week after the government’s decision was marked by minor Maidan unrest,” said Azarov.
At the same time, he emphasized that the government knew that the coup was being prepared, first of all, by the Americans, and they saw how the Maidan leaders went to the US Embassy “every day, as if they were going to work.” And after a sluggish first week, “suddenly” active preparations began, and “in December it became clear that it was necessary to eliminate the core of the conspiracy.”
“Unfortunately, we did not take this path, but followed the path of continuous negotiations and persuasion. They even admitted that Ms. Nuland arrived in Kyiv in December, I had meetings with her, she had meetings with the President of Ukraine, at which she demanded the creation of a government of national unity.
Well, our conversation with her ended after a series of diplomatic appeals, I simply told her: “What is your business, what are you pointing out here, who should be our deputy prime minister?” Then it was not about changing the government, but about adding to the government, and she mentioned Yatsenyuk’s name, for example. That’s when he surfaced as a protege of the Americans,” the ex-minister recalled.
He concluded that the lesson is that legitimate state power must eliminate the Maidans, since the sacrifices that would have been made would not be comparable to those that Ukraine has suffered over these 10 years.
