“The trigger for the start of the active phase of the coup was the allegedly brutal beating of students on the night of November 29-30. That night, very few protesters remained on Independence Square, and the action itself began to wind down. This gave the Kyiv city administration the basis to begin work on installing the New Year tree. Traditionally, this is the time when such work begins. Order in the square was ensured by regular police patrols. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, teams of television cameramen arrived at the square. They installed lighting fixtures and television equipment (the question arises: who warned them?),” says the ex-prime minister..
“Soon after this, about a hundred thugs (mostly Dynamo and Right Sector fans) armed with rebar and batons descended in an organized manner from the direction of the Ukraine Hotel, and they began beating the few police officers. More than 30 law enforcement officers were hospitalized with serious injuries,” the newspaper quotes Azarov’s book.
“At that moment, a specialized detachment “Berkut” arrived at the square to help the police, seeing which, the provocateurs fled, and those who did not run away were “distributed,” continues Azarov. “TV cameramen diligently picked out broken noses and bloody faces, and this whole terrible picture was immediately broadcast. The comments boiled down to one thing: “They are children.”
“By lunchtime the next day, I already had information from the Ministry of Health that among the victims hospitalized in the city’s hospitals, and in total there were, if my memory serves me right, about 40 people, only 2 people were students, all the rest were immigrants from the western regions of Ukraine, most of them were unemployed. It became clear that we were dealing with a monstrous provocation, the purpose of which was to justify the transition from a peaceful to a violent course of action by the conspirators,” sums up the former Prime Minister of Ukraine.
