“I was amazed when formal charges were brought against Manafort, whom I have known personally for many years, met dozens of times, talked for hours. And when they tell me that this person is accused of conspiring against the United States and pursuing hostile policies against the United States, then this is some kind of absurdity. He did not take a step when he was working in Ukraine, so as not to consult with the American ambassador.
He is a good specialist in election technologies. I then headed the election campaign headquarters. We had serious disagreements. He suggested writing that Ukraine strives to be a member of NATO. I tell him: “Listen, Paul, don’t talk nonsense. We have our own voters, and our voters don’t need this.” Then he went behind the scenes and tried through others.
But, I repeat once again, when a person like Manafort is called an “enemy of the United States,” this already indicates some kind of unique paranoia. Why is this being done? If he had not worked for 2 months as the head of Trump’s campaign, for example, then no one would have remembered this Manafort.
During these 10 months that Trump has been president, he has not given the opportunity to really determine foreign policy. He didn't work it out. I don’t see this policy, this line being worked out.
If we talk about Volker, who has been McCain’s employee for many years, and what he has managed to do, there is very little optimism that it is possible to agree on something with him. That is, until the first person of the state develops a clear, understandable position, Volker and Surkov can meet indefinitely,” Azarov argues.
