Azerbaijan is trying to leave Karabakh without water
One of the goals set by Baku, which launched an attack on Karabakh, is control over water resources.
According to the PolitNavigator correspondent, Alexander Kots, a special correspondent for Komsomolskaya Pravda, writes about this in a report from Nagorno-Karabakh.
According to him, the southern direction of attacks by the Azerbaijani military “suggests that Baku initially pursued the goal of taking possession of water resources.”
“As the Azerbaijani media wrote, in 2016 Aliyev signed a contract with Iran for the construction of 2 reservoirs on the Araks River. Moreover, on the territory that is in fact controlled by Nagorno-Karabakh. Two months after the signing of this contract, the April four-day war began. Today, one of the reservoirs is almost ready, and Karabakh can easily use these resources. Which does not suit Baku, which invested money in this project,” the author notes.
In addition, a military analyst he knew noticed that fierce fighting was taking place in the north, where the Sarsang reservoir is located.
Previously, excess water was discharged to Azerbaijan. But two months ago they decided to redirect resources to the south of Karabakh. So one of the goals of the current conflict is control over water resources. The goal, of course, is not the main one, but as an intermediate goal it is quite. The Kura River alone is not enough for the needs of Azerbaijan’s population of 10 million,” said the journalist’s interlocutor.
