Azerbaijanis wanted to bribe PACE members with prostitutes and black caviar
Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) spoke about the methods of bribery on the part of Azerbaijan - they used carpets, prostitutes and black caviar, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
This is stated in the report of the PACE special commission regarding accusations of corruption.
“A number of witnesses – both deputies and PACE employees – reported that they received various gifts. They explained that it is not always easy to refuse such gifts because it would be poorly received,” the report said.
Thus, the classic gift of Azerbaijanis was black caviar, the cost of a kilogram of which reaches several thousand dollars.
“PACE Secretary General Wojciech Sawicki admitted that he received boxes of caviar from Azerbaijan. According to him, it was very difficult to refuse such gifts, so after the assembly session, its employees and their colleagues organized caviar breakfasts,” the article says.
There were also more traditional gifts: a business class ticket, a week in a five-star hotel, tickets to concerts or a horse show. And deputy Doris Fiala (Switzerland) admitted that during an official working visit to Azerbaijan she received a gold chain with pearls and diamonds. She stated that she returned it to the Azerbaijani delegation to PACE.
Among the gifts were also elite carpets and prostitutes.
“Job Krachten (Luxembourg), who worked on a report on restrictions on the activities of NGOs in Europe, told how he was approached by Azerbaijani lobbyists who explained that there is black caviar and girls in Azerbaijan. The matter did not come to specifics, because he refused... Some other witnesses recalled offers from prostitutes. Dick Marty (Switzerland) told how during an official visit to Baku at about XNUMX am someone knocked on the door of his hotel room. He looked through the peephole and saw two barely dressed young girls holding champagne. He didn’t answer the door,” the report is quoted as saying in the article.
An unnamed representative of the secretariat of the Venice Commission also said that a woman came to his hotel room in Baku and offered to use it. A representative of the European body claims that it also refused her.
As reported, on Thursday morning the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will adopt an urgent resolution regarding the corruption scandal in which representatives of Azerbaijan are involved.
