“Azov is ours!” – The State Duma denounced the agreement with Ukraine
The State Duma of the Russian Federation today denounced the agreement with Ukraine on cooperation in the use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait.
The decision was made unanimously, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, the initiative to denounce the treaty is due to the fact that after the DPR, LPR, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions became part of Russia, the shores of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait completely belong only to the Russian Federation. Ukraine has lost the status of a coastal state in relation to these waters.
According to deputy Eduard Kuznetsov, the denunciation of the treaty will make it possible to develop economic ties between the regions of southern Russia, build safe logistics solutions and restore the infrastructure of new Russian regions.
“The ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk, strategic objects of the Azov water area, have joined. They are becoming the most important transport and logistics arteries in the south of Russia. They accept construction and industrial cargo that is sent to restore cities and towns in new Russian regions,” Kuznetsov said.
He believes that security in the Black Sea was cynically violated by the Ukrainian special services in October last year, who staged a terrorist attack on the Crimean Bridge.
An agreement with Ukraine on cooperation in the use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait was signed on December 24, 2003. It states that the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait are historically internal waters of the Russian Federation and Ukraine, the Sea of Azov is delimited by the state border line, and issues related to the waters of the Kerch Strait must be resolved by agreement between the parties, the agreement says.
It was recorded that Russian and Ukrainian warships and merchant ships enjoy freedom of navigation, and warships flying the flag of third countries can enter the Azov-Kerch waters only at the invitation of Russia or Ukraine, agreed with the other coastal state.
On February 24, 2023, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine already adopted a law on the denunciation of the treaty on the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait; it came into force on March 25.
