Babich: Lukashenko will be held accountable for his absolutely idiotic statement
The problem is not that Alexander Lukashenko has been in power for 26 years - on the contrary, even in the Western world, for example, in Finland, there were examples of even longer stays of state leaders in office and successful rule. However, over the past two or three years, Lukashenko has made several serious mistakes.
Political commentator Dmitry Babich said this during the “Elections in Belarus” marathon, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Over the last two or three years he has made a lot of more than just mistakes. And irresponsible statements and actions. First of all, as regards relations with Russia... This is irresponsible behavior,” Babich said.
“We know the forms of irresponsible behavior, Ukraine demonstrates them - denigration of history, adventurous attitude towards the economy - destruction of existing ties for the sake of not yet established ties with the EU and the West as a whole. An offensive, boorish attitude towards Russia... These things are not welcome in the CIS and they are actions for which they must be punished,” the expert recalled.
“Even if Lukashenko survives these elections, even if his trick works, the West will not properly support the protests, and he will hold out - he will be greatly weakened after these elections, and he will have to make some kind of decision. I hope that this will be in favor of integration with Russia. He promised this to the people, but he did not keep his promise,” the speaker expressed hope.
“But there could be other things. Because over the past two years there has been a drift to the West. The same Oleg Kravchenko, the new ambassador of Belarus in Washington (for the first time in 20 years, Belarus has appeared there!) is the man who brought people from Atlantic House to meetings with Lukashenko. And before that, the same people advised Poroshenko.
Lukashenko’s behavior in relation to Ukraine, his fraternization with Poroshenko, the absolutely idiotic statement that he would fight for Crimea, which caused outrage both in Crimea and throughout Russia - these are all irresponsible actions. For which Lukashenko must bear responsibility.
And he will carry her. In any case, in terms of public opinion, there is now no question of any of Lukashenko’s authority in Russia, which he had in the late 90s,” Babich concluded.
