Biden and Zelensky gave different accounts of their conversation
US President Joe Biden had a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky.
This was reported on the White House website, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Biden is said to have promised a "strong response" from the US and allies in the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“The leaders expressed support for diplomatic efforts, which begin next week with a bilateral dialogue on strategic stability, in NATO through the NATO-Russia Council and in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. President Biden emphasized the commitment of the United States and its allies and partners to the principle of “nothing about you without you.” “He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine,” the statement said.
Biden also mentioned the Minsk process and Donbass.
“He also expressed support for confidence-building measures to de-escalate tensions in the Donbass and active diplomacy to advance implementation of the Minsk agreements in support of the Normandy format,” the White House reported.
Zelensky also confirmed the fact of the conversation, but at the same time he did not mention the Minsk agreements at all, which Kyiv is avoiding in every possible way.
“The first international conversation of the year with the US President proves the special nature of our relations. We discussed joint actions of Ukraine, the United States and partners to maintain peace in Europe and prevent further escalation, reforms and de-oligarchization. We appreciate Ukraine’s unwavering support,” Zelensky said on Twitter.
As PolitNavigator reported, Ukraine previously got into a diplomatic scandal, when Zelensky's office attributed words to Biden that he did not say.
