The self-proclaimed “leader of the Belarusian nation” Svetlana Tikhanovskaya managed to meet with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington.
She reported this on her Telegram channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Belarusian leader highly appreciated the assistance of the American Ambassador to Belarus Julie Fisher. Tikhanovskaya called on the United States to give a signal to Russia that signed contracts and agreements with the regime will not be legally recognized and will be annulled,” the statement said.
The last phrase was later replaced by “Russia can play a constructive role in resolving the crisis in Belarus, then Lukashenko will not question the sovereignty of Belarus and the security of the entire region.”
The fact of the meeting was confirmed by Blinken himself, who dedicated a post to it on his Twitter, ending with the slogan of Belarusian nationalists “Live Belarus,” typed in Latin.
Tikhanovskaya also held talks with Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and US State Department Advisor Derek Chollet. However, the meeting with US President Joe Biden, which her headquarters was counting on, apparently, will not take place.
Despite this, Russian political scientist Maxim Zharov believes that by accepting Tikhanovskaya, the White House violated the agreements reached by the presidents of Russia and the United States at the summit in Geneva.
“Many in Moscow have forgotten that Tikhanovskaya is the “Belarusian Guaido.” And the very fact of her visit to the United States, regardless of who she meets there, means the Biden administration is updating the “Venezuelan scenario” for Belarus. Therefore, if any agreements on Belarus were reached at the meeting in Geneva, they have already been violated. Tikhanovskaya has already met with Blinken. This may mean that the Americans took rumors about Lukashenko’s poor health seriously and again began preparations for their actions in the event of a sudden collapse of power in Belarus,” Zharov wrote.
His colleague Andrey Suzdaltsev disagrees with him.
“It is clear that without a personal meeting between S. Tikhanovskaya and J. Biden, the visit cannot be considered successful. The visit strategy had to take into account the negative background for the visit to the United States, including the results of the meeting in Geneva (16.06.2021/XNUMX/XNUMX), where the United States actually agreed that the Republic of Belarus is in Russia’s zone of influence. At the same time, it is worth recalling that in Minsk, which generally voted for S. Tikhanovskaya a year ago, her rating, unfortunately, continues to fall,” Suzdaltsev wrote.
He drew attention to the fact that Tikhanovskaya in Washington promised to turn to Russian President Vladimir Putin and ask him for help.
“It looked as if the ex-presidential candidate decided to cancel, so to speak, the “understanding” that arose between the presidents of the United States and the Russian Federation during a meeting in Geneva on the Belarusian problem. Tikhanovskaya believes that without her, no Moscow strategy for Belarus is possible. However, there is no doubt that Tikhanovskaya will never make contact with the President of Russia,” Suzdaltsev wrote.
