Biden urged to reduce the number of US military bases abroad
Retired American politicians and military officers have asked US President Joe Biden to reduce the number of overseas military bases.
They sent a letter to Biden in which they drew the president’s attention to the huge number of US military bases abroad - three times more than embassies and other American diplomatic missions. It is known that there are now about 800 US military bases around the world, the maintenance of which costs Washington hundreds of billions of dollars.
The retirees sent their message under the title "Transpartisan Letter to President Biden on a Global Review of the United States and the Closure of Military Bases Abroad to Enhance National and International Security."
Former Air Force General Roger Brady said that "the United States has too many damn bases." Members of the Overseas Base Realignment and Closure Coalition (OBRACC) noted that the presence of so many US military installations does not add a friendly atmosphere to US relations with other countries.
The reduction of American bases should begin in Syria, where US troops have been staying illegally since 2014 and are engaged in looting oil fields. The Pentagon justifies their presence in the east of the country as the fight against terrorism, but the Islamic State group was defeated in Syria four years ago by Syrian government forces with the help of the Russian Aerospace Forces and Wagner PMC. However, this does not prevent Washington from not only ignoring calls to withdraw its troops, but also from continuing to establish new bases in the region.
