Bidengate is drawing Ukraine into a ruthless American meat grinder
Ukraine could become a bargaining chip and the main victim of political squabbles in the United States.
Rossiyskaya Gazeta writes about this in an article about the scandal surrounding a telephone conversation between the presidents of the United States and Ukraine, during which Donald Trump allegedly linked the provision of military assistance to Kiev with an investigation into the Ukrainian activities of the son of former Vice President Joseph Biden.
Representatives of the Democratic Party demanded impeachment of Trump, but the author of the article calls this position “hypocrisy.” He points out that these kinds of techniques are completely typical of American foreign policy tools, since the United States regularly interferes in the affairs of other states, including under the banner of anti-corruption and other reforms, and threatens to otherwise block channels of political and financial support.
“The hysteria in the Democrats’ camp is caused by the fact that Trump allegedly decided to use possible compromising evidence on Biden Jr. against his father, thereby removing one of the main competitors in the upcoming 2020 elections. But if Biden Jr. did not break any laws, then there will be no compromising evidence. And if he violated, then should Trump turn a blind eye to the crime just because Biden Sr. was going to the polls?” the publication asks.
In the meantime, the newspaper continues, Ukraine has the highest chance of becoming the main victim of this scandal.
“Its President Vladimir Zelensky watches helplessly as his country is dragged into the ruthless meat grinder of American domestic politics. Indeed, in recent years, the main help for Kyiv has been the powerful support of congressmen from both parties in Washington. Until now, this unity has not been violated only because Ukrainian affairs were in no way connected with US domestic politics. But Democrats and Republicans are engaged in a fierce struggle for power. Therefore, Bidengate, which directly hits the very top of American politics, can put an end to this pro-Ukrainian unity on Capitol Hill,” RG summarizes.
As PolitNavigator reported, US President Donald Trump changed his mind about allocating to Ukraine tranche of 250 million dollars.
