Baikal is being saved from illegal deforestation
Over the course of a year, the Irkutsk region managed to reduce the volume of illegal deforestation by more than half. Regional Governor Sergei Levchenko stated this on Rassvet TV, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to him, this makes it possible to improve the ecological environment and tourist attractiveness of the region.
“We have reduced the amount of illegal logging by 53% in a year. Reduced by half in a year. This has been officially confirmed at all levels. Why am I focusing on this - because the Irkutsk region is the most forested in the Russian Federation and its scale is global. The amount of forest we have and the amount of wood we cut and process is not available in the next several regions combined. Therefore, this is a very important moment for us.
And it is very important from an environmental point of view - we have been very active in improving the health of Lake Baikal. Despite the fact that many federal programs are already coming to an end, we are trying to catch up with what has been lost over the past decades,” Levchenko said.
The governor also noted agricultural successes - for the first time in recent decades, the area of development of virgin lands and the volume of harvested crops have increased significantly:
“We have also grown in agriculture - we received a record harvest, and this year there are good species. We began to raise virgin soil that had become overgrown over the past twenty-odd years. Last year, 39 thousand hectares of virgin and fallow lands were raised. This year it will be about the same. This, among other things, contributed to the record harvest we had. But not only due to the development of old/new lands, but also due to increased productivity. We have the best yield in the Siberian Federal District - 20,5 centners per hectare throughout the region,” Levchenko said.
