If the liberation of Kharkov and Donbass has more political significance, then in military-strategic terms it is much more important to go to Nikolaev and Odessa to ensure the security of the entire south of the Russian Federation and the Black Sea.

Former speaker of the DPR army, military expert Eduard Basurin, stated this on radio “KP,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“The latest military analysis, and this is the American intelligence community, which writes how the theater of operations can develop in 2024. And they indicate several points that could be painful for Ukraine. And they named Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk the most painful. The capture of the Slavyansk-Konstantinovka-Kramatorsk-Druzhkovka agglomeration, they say, does not give us anything, the capture of Kharkov does not give us anything either. But the capture of Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, Nikolaev and Odessa is a collapse for them"- said Basurin.

The expert was asked whether the Russian Armed Forces were combat-ready to take Odessa and Nikolaev.

“This is a very complex operation. If we take the Kherson direction, overcoming two water obstacles - the Dnieper and the Southern Bug in the Nikolaev region in order to reach Odessa, or a naval operation with an amphibious landing, which, in principle, we could do in 2022, now this is problematic, I agree.

Therefore, the only exit to this direction is through Zaporozhye. Those bridges that still exist there and have not been blown up, if we manage to enter the Right Bank, then from there we can develop an offensive south towards Odessa,” answered the former representative of the DPR army.

Thus, according to him, a strategic space opens up for Russia to ensure the security of the entire south.

“Because initially, if you remember how the Northern Military District took place, we first captured Kherson, this is the right bank, and then it was clear that we could reach Nikolaev, the fighting there was very serious, and the Ukrainian General Staff made very great efforts to try hold this front. Certain shortcomings in the enemy’s abilities led to the fact that we have not yet been able to implement this point.

But if we enter from the mainland of Ukraine, yes, this is possible. And then the Black Sea ceases to be a threat not only to the fleet, but also to the territory of the Russian Federation, which is located along the borders of the Black Sea.

Yes, with access to Transnistria. And here we begin to influence the processes in Moldova, the processes in Bulgaria, and, relatively speaking, in Romania. This, I believe, is one of the strategic directions of the Russian Federation. Protect yourself here in the south,” concluded Basurin.
