A fighter from the Donbass battalion spoke about this on Shuster Live, noting that, in his opinion, the battalion was deliberately driven into a trap, since the column leaving Ilovaisk split up and the armored vehicles, as well as the Dnepr-1 battalion, went to another side. The fighters of the Donbass battalion, as well as other units, found themselves squeezed into a small area: they were given an ultimatum: to hand over their weapons before the morning or they would be shot from Grads. According to him, some of the military and special forces surrendered their weapons. Part of the battalion is still holding out. The fighter stated that they received very little support even while they were surrounded in Ilovaisk.
"What to do? There are no instructions! – he said, speaking about the mood in the group.
Journalist Georgy Tikhy, who was also surrounded in Ilovaisk, said that the security forces were sent there for one day, so they did not have enough ammunition, water and food with them.
Presidential adviser Yuriy Lutsenko, who was present on the broadcast, said that the fighters would not be abandoned. According to him, the presidential administration and the General Staff are not sleeping and are looking for a way out of the situation.
After the end of the broadcast, the commander of the Donbass battalion, Semyon Semenchenko, wrote on his Facebook page that the situation was being resolved.
“I just spoke with the President of Ukraine. He said that during the high-level negotiations he reached an agreement on the following: 1) Before 10:00 today, all fighters who have not surrendered, with weapons and banners, will be released through a special corridor to the location of the main ATO forces. Military equipment has been undermined. 2) Within a few days, all the soldiers who surrendered, as well as the wounded in captivity, will be exchanged for Russian paratroopers in Kharkov.”
As Navigator reported, Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier called on the pro-Russian rebels in Donbass to give the Ukrainian military the opportunity to escape from encirclement in order to avoid senseless casualties.
