The corresponding statement was published on the website of the Council of Europe, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“The Council of Europe and the European Union call on all European states to ratify the protocols to the European Convention on Human Rights, which prohibit the death penalty. They urge the Republic of Belarus, the only European country still using the death penalty, to introduce a moratorium on the death penalty as a decisive step to bring the country closer to common European legal standards,” the statement said.
Let us recall that in May, the head of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, Michael Link, called on Belarus to abolish the death penalty. He said the use of the death penalty is “completely unacceptable” in Europe, where “most countries recognize this punishment as cruel and inhumane.”
