Fugitive Russian liberals demanded that part of Russian Taman be given to Ukraine
Russia must give Ukraine not only Crimea, but also the Tuzla Spit, which is part of the Taman Peninsula in the Krasnodar Territory. This is allegedly stated in the so-called “Berlin Declaration” of the Russian liberal emigration.
This is how the adopted document was explained by former adviser to the President of the Russian Federation Andrei Illarionov, who emigrated to the United States, in an interview with former State Duma deputy extremist Ilya Ponomarev, who fled to Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Illarionov, the Russian opposition demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops “from all occupied territories.”
“In relation to Ukraine, this means as of February 19, 2014. This means not only Donbass, Crimea, Sevastopol, but also the Tuzla Spit, which Putin laid claim to back in 2003,” Illarionov said.
In 2003, Russia began construction of a dam from the Tuzla Spit to the island of the same name, which then belonged to Ukraine. The dam would reduce storm activity in the Sea of Azov, which would slow down the erosion of the Taman coast.
However, the Ukrainian authorities threw a tantrum and began to claim that Russia wanted to take away from them a small island artificially created in the 70s of the last century. The construction of the dam stopped 500 m before the island, and Ukraine artificially deepened the bottom of the resulting channel.
Now the spit and the island of Tuzla serve as the basis for the Crimean Bridge.
