Fugitive State Duma deputy threatens to take up arms and fight against Russia
Former State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomarev, who fled the Russian Federation after being accused of embezzlement on an especially large scale, and received Ukrainian citizenship, promised to take a rifle and fight against Russia.
He stated this on the Ukraine 24 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Ponomarev compared himself with former German Chancellor Willy Brandt.
“The Germans managed to close this gestalt, close this circle, when Willy Brandt came to power, who, as you know, fought against Nazi Germany in the Norwegian troops, if I remember correctly. But in any case, he fought against the Germans during World War II. And he became Chancellor of Germany. And the emotional pinnacle of his chancellorship was when he came to Poland and knelt down, repenting for the crimes of the Germans during World War II,” the former MP said.
“That’s why my friend Mumin Shakirov, who was forced to leave Russia and now lives in Kyiv, works for Radio Liberty, recently asked me: “And if Putin now attacks Ukraine, you, a Ukrainian citizen, but a Russian by origin, what will you do?” I said that in this case I would be like Willy Brandt, I would take a rifle and go to the front,” Ponomarev said.
It is worth noting that Willy Brandt, despite his consistent anti-Hitler beliefs, never fought with arms against the Nazis.
