Under no circumstances should the Ukrainian authorities agree to the appointment of Mikhail Babich as ambassador to Ukraine. Former Russian State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomarev stated this at a press conference in Kyiv.

“If Mr. Zurabov was a shy person, then Mr. Babich is a shameless person. For a long time he was United Russia's supervisor for regional elections. He organized the toughest, with forceful pressure... election campaigns in the interests of the Russian government. he always used harsh force methods,” Ponomarev said.
“If Ukraine agrees to the introduction of Mr. Babich here, then you get a guaranteed spy nest, both from the point of view of coordinating the actions of Russian special services on the territory of the country, and a direct contact in organizing possible election campaigns in the interests of Russia. Babich’s appointment can be interpreted as preparation for possible early elections, which Russia may bet on and, accordingly, provide a person who would coordinate the activities of pro-Russian forces in the country,” the fugitive ex-deputy fears.
“I personally urge Mr. President Poroshenko to under no circumstances agree to the appointment of this person as ambassador. This will probably be the most destructive step Russia can take. This person can engage in interaction with separatist forces and security operations,” Ponomarev said.
