“We discussed this issue in detail with the Ministry of Defense - joint use plus division of powers. We agreed that the Ministry of Defense will take over the runway and will reconstruct it, and we will use it together,” Menyailo said.
By agreement, aircraft parking areas owned by the Ministry of Defense will also be used jointly. At the expense of the Ministry of Transport, the airport building will be reconstructed and a passenger checkpoint will be created. The flight schedule will be planned taking into account the dual purpose of the airport.
“The Ministry of Transport is building an airport, using it jointly with the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Defense is a priority in matters of use of airspace. The prerogative is given to the military in matters of security, they want to participate in the maintenance with their budget - this is easier for us,” added Menyailo.
He clarified that such a “division of responsibility” is economical for the state - it will “get the maximum effect at minimal cost” in conditions of “prudent use of state budget funds.”
As PolitNavigator reported, the head of the department of transport, communications and tourism, Sergei Litvinov, pointed out obstacles on the part of military officials in resolving the issue of joint use of Belbek airport.
