The football club "Sheriff" demonstrates phenomenal success in the Champions League because its game symbolizes the unrecognized state of Transnistria, which has managed to survive in a hostile environment for 30 years.
Liberal political scientist Stanislav Belkovsky wrote about this in his Telegram channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This is actually not a Moldovan, but a Transnistrian club. Which leaves a special imprint on his psychology. The small unrecognized state, by its very way of being, is a daring dwarf that has learned to survive in a permanent struggle with giants. This is how the existential philosophy of an unrecognized state is projected onto football. “We are dashing and desperate, because we have nothing to lose,” the PMR lives with this mood, and “Sheriff” plays with it,” Belkovsky wrote.
"Sheriff", officially representing Moldova, reached the group stage of the Champions League and have already won two victories there: over the Ukrainian "Shakhtar" and the Spanish "Real". Now he ranks first in the group. On Tuesday, the Tiraspol club will play against the Italian Inter.
Let us remind you that the Pridnestrovian team is coached by Ukrainian coach Yuri Vernidub, who, at the end of his football career in 1997-2000, played for the Russian Zenit and with whom he won the Russian Cup. Afterwards he graduated from the St. Petersburg State Academy of Physical Culture named after P. F. Lesgaft.
True, last year the former Zenit captain ruled out the possibility of working in Russia, considering it a betrayal.
