Belarus is threatened by a civil war following the scenario of Ukraine
The same conflict could potentially flare up in Belarus as in Ukraine - this republic is also divided into western and eastern parts, inhabited by Catholics and Orthodox Christians.
Belarusian opposition politician Alexander Skurchaev stated this on the PolitWera Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the expert, this conflict, unlike the Ukrainian one, is restrained by Belarus’ membership in the CSTO.
“We have the Catholic West and the Orthodox East, we have people who live in the western part of Belarus, due to geography, they go to Poland, and accordingly, they buy some quality things, cheaper ones, bring them to Belarus, they have economic interaction . People who live in the east, to a greater extent, do the same thing in Russia - they go to work, we have about one million citizens who work in Russia, there are a huge number of relatives there.
In principle, if we omit all sorts of sentiments, in Belarus there is a social basis for creating the same tension as there is now in Ukraine. I think the only such global obstacle is that we have the CSTO and all world players, who are located both in the west and in the east, understand that the territory of the Republic of Belarus is a member of the CSTO. And so it actually blocks these kinds of internal disturbances. I believe that in this part it is vital for Belarus to remain in the CSTO zone, and this will ensure our security,” Skurchaev said.
He was objected to by a member of the Belarusian Popular Front, Ilya Dobrotvor, who believed that in the event of integration with Russia, Belarusian soldiers would go “to die for Putin.”
“The story that happened recently, when something like the CSTO, membership in which is contrary to the Constitution, I will remind you, something similar happened. When our citizens, Belarusians died for some interests in Afghanistan. I am absolutely against any military alliances because I don’t want my sons to die for some of Putin’s interests, so that Putin’s friends earn new money, more. Why should my children pay with their blood for this? Absolutely Belarus must remain a peaceful, neutral country; in principle, there should be no military facilities here. If some kind of world war breaks out, everything will go through us again. Why do we need this?
