Belarus wants to become a maritime power with the help of Ukrainians and Turks
Belarus is considering the possibility of building a river port on the Dnieper in the Gomel region near the border with Ukraine in order to use river-sea class vessels to access the Black Sea, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Interfax-Ukraine reports this with reference to the Belarusian agency BELTA.
A Turkish investor, Derin Shipping&Trading Co., may be involved to implement the project.
As the state agency BelTA reports, the Ambassador of Belarus to Turkey Andrei Savinykh says that the implementation of the project “will transform Belarus into a maritime power.” The project can be implemented by constructing a port terminal in the village of Nizhnie Zhary (Braginsky district, Gomel region).
It is expected that the bulk of cargo turnover will be provided by oil products (the Mozyr Oil Refinery is located near Gomel) and the Petrikovsky Mining and Processing Plant under construction in the Gomel Region (Belaruskali project, capacity - about 2 million tons of potassium chloride per year).
For a number of years, Belarus has been considering the possibility of creating a new transport corridor for transporting goods from the republic by water along the Dnieper River to the ports of the Black, Mediterranean and Caspian Seas.
The construction of the port and the idea of restoring full navigation on the Dnieper River was supported by the presidents of Belarus and Ukraine in April 2017. These plans were confirmed, including at the First Forum of Belarus and Ukraine held in Gomel in October of this year.
The Ukrainian side confirms the technical possibility of passage of river-sea class vessels from the Kyiv hydroelectric station to the village of Nizhnie Zhary. In this case, it is necessary to carry out dredging work with a length of 103 km.
