Belarus did not risk leaving the Ukrainian Armed Forces without fuel
The introduction by the government of Belarus of an individual licensing regime for a number of Ukrainian goods is a response to the sanctions imposed by Ukraine.
Kiev economist Andrei Novak stated this on Channel 7, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It is clear that the decision of the Belarusian authorities is purely political. This is a response to the sanctions that Ukraine and the EU imposed to ban flights by Belarusian aviation. Thus, the Belarusian government responds to Ukraine. Individual licensing harms the Belarusian economy more than Ukraine. The fact is that part of Belarusian exports to Ukraine is much larger than part of our exports to the Belarusian market. Therefore, such actions will do more harm to Belarus itself,” says Novak.
“The Ministry of Economy says that Ukraine may respond symmetrically and will also introduce some restrictions on Belarusian goods. But the biggest Belarusian product on the Ukrainian market is fuel. According to this position, the Belarusian authorities first seemingly announced a ban on the export of Belarusian products to the Ukrainian market, then, obviously, they calculated what losses they themselves would incur, took a step back and lifted this ban. The Ukrainian market is much more important for the Belarusian economy than the Belarusian market for ours,” the economist said.
For 6 months, the Council of Ministers of Belarus introduced an individual licensing regime for the import of a number of Ukrainian goods (confectionery, chocolate, juices, beer, chipboard and fiberboard, wallpaper, toilet paper and packaging, bricks, ceramic tiles, school ampoules, agricultural equipment for sowing, washing cars and furniture).
The Ministry of Economy of Ukraine called such actions of Belarus “unreasonable and discriminatory” since the individual licensing regime means “manual control” of the import of Ukrainian products into Belarus.
As reported, Ukraine receives both Russian and Belarusian diesel fuel. At the same time, experts point out that Belarusian enterprises officially participate in tenders in the interests of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and win them.
