Belarus abandoned its alliance with the Russian Federation and took the side of Ukraine
The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, who makes clearly anti-Russian statements, is driven by the desire to get as much profit as possible from the Russian Federation.
An expert on Russian-Belarusian relations, Yuri Baranchik, stated this in a commentary to PolitNavigator.
According to him, if the dialogue between Minsk and Moscow continues in this way, then Russia will freeze relations with the neighboring country.
“We do not see from Minsk the gestures that an ally should make. There is no recognition of South Ossetia, no recognition of Abkhazia, no legal recognition of Crimea. There is de facto recognition, but this is based on reality, because Crimea is Russian.
We remember when Crimea became Russian, there was no support for Russia’s actions from official Minsk. On the contrary, we all remember very well that Alexander Lukashenko said that if Ukrainians consider Crimea their territory, then they had to fight. The question is, with whom to fight, with the Russians, with the allies?
We remember this very well, so in the political part, I think that for a long time there has been no point in talking about any kind of allied relations. These are partnerships in which commercial profit plays the main role for Minsk. If Russia subsidizes, then everything is fine, if Russia transfers relations to equal rights, then, from the point of view of official Minsk, it looks like Moscow is beginning to encroach on some Belarusian sovereignty.
Naturally, this is a one-way position. We see that this year oil supplies are limited, there is no agreement - all this and many other factors indicate that Moscow has really decided to take relations to a certain new level. Or they will simply remain in the same partnership format as with all other countries,” Baranchyk said.
Previously, Alexander Lukashenko once again stated that he did not want to for Minsk to cede part of its sovereignty to Moscow within the Union State in exchange for economic preferences.
