The Belarusian authorities came out with official statement regarding the arrests of pro-Russian journalists who criticized Alexander Lukashenko for flirting with the West and local nationalists, which ultimately threatens to lead to a repeat of the Maidan, as in Ukraine.

“An analysis of the information space has revealed that recently there has been an increase in the appearance in a number of media and Internet resources of materials of a tendentious and sometimes downright destructive nature in relation to Belarus, the state authorities of our country, and the Belarusian people. In particular, there have been repeated publications of similar materials on Russian information resources REGNUM, LENTA.RU, Eurasia Daily and others. Such publications call into question the sovereignty of Belarus and contain offensive statements about the Belarusian people, their history, language, and culture.

The REGNUM news agency is most active in publishing this kind of material, presenting in a biased manner the activities of the head of the Belarusian state and government structures in various fields - politics, economics, culture. At the same time, theses about the alleged “leave of Belarus to the West,” “the anti-Russian policy of the Belarusian government,” and so on are constantly being exaggerated.

A glaring fact was the posting on October 25, 2016 on REGNUM of an author’s article under the pseudonym Alla Bron (it is now known that Brest resident Dmitry Alimkin was hiding under it) “Belarus is leaving the Russian world on the sly, taking into account the Ukrainian experience. Belarusian language: not by washing, but by rolling".

I will quote from the article: “...the Belarusian language still has no chance. Nobody needs him except a maddened sub-state seeking to break its neck on the Maidan following the example of its neighbors“. Or these passages: “The Belarusian language is needed only for what it was invented for - for the gradual translation of Russians into Poles...","Stalin, who by that time had received full power, defeated them and stopped Belarusization. But after the collapse of the USSR, the unfinished policemen and their grandchildren began their dirty work again".

It becomes clear why this article caused a wide public outcry.

The Ministry of Information considers it unacceptable to publish statements such as those expressed by the author of this article in any media. This and a number of other similar materials were sent to the Republican Expert Commission. The commission confirmed the presence of signs of extremism in these materials in terms of inciting (inciting) national and social hatred.

Within the framework of the current legislation, the Ministry of Information sent to the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus the conclusions of the commission, as well as materials from articles to conduct an investigation into whether the actions of the authors of these articles contained signs of a crime under Article 130 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus (inciting racial, national, religious or other social hatred or discord),” said Minister of Information of the Republic of Belarus Liliya Ananich.

“The appeal was sent to the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for International Cultural Cooperation, Mikhail Shvydkoy. By the way, we have already received his response, which emphasizes that statements offensive towards Belarus belong “often to marginalized authors, and in no way reflect the position of the Russian leadership, which invariably strives to deepen Russian-Belarusian interaction in all areas of cooperation, nor Russians traditionally have a friendly attitude towards Belarus and its people.”

It is obvious that the customers and authors of such articles are trying to sow discord between our countries and peoples. Of course, this is not the position of the Russian leadership, but of those destructive forces and circles that are trying to drive a wedge into our deep friendly relations, into the process of building the Union State,” added the Minsk official.
