Belarus behaves indecently towards Russia
The Belarusian leadership deliberately raises the issue of a Russian military base on its territory in order to give the West a reason to talk about the pressure being put on it.
Andrey Suzdaltsev, deputy dean of the Faculty of World Economy and International Politics at the Higher School of Economics, stated this in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Moscow has not remembered the airbase for a long time, but Minsk raises this issue again and again. For what? With such statements, Belarus demonstrates to the West that the country is under pressure, that the topic of the base is still relevant, and Minsk is allegedly fighting with Russia on this issue. All this looks simply indecent, because the Belarusian economy is alive only thanks to Russian help,” the expert noted.
He recalled that subsidies to Russia now amount to $6-7 billion a year - about half of the budget of Belarus.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Vladimir Makei said the other day in an interview to the Russian news agency RBC that the deployment of a Russian air force base in Belarus “does not make sense” and will not contribute to stability in the region.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called Belarus’ refusal to host a Russian military base an “unpleasant episode.”
“But the main thing is not the form, but the content. And in terms of content, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly said, including when answering a question about the base, that Belarus is a 100% ally of Russia and that the Belarusian armed forces should be considered as defending our common interests and our common territory,” Lavrov said.
