The Belarusian opposition is approaching the moment of unity with Russia
By speaking out against the permanent President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarusian opposition may hasten the absorption of their country by Russia.
Liberal political scientist Ekaterina Shulman stated this in an interview with blogger Ilya Varlamov, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Some of the internal tragedy of the current Belarusian protests is that their autocrat, unlike ours and along with the Kazakh first president, is the father of their political nation and the author of their sovereignty. Therefore, by fighting against him, they can open the way to their capital for a heavily militarized neighboring power. It’s impossible not to think about it,” the expert believes.
At the same time, she believes that this should not become a motive for the opposition to abandon the fight.
“It is also impossible to tell Belarusians in this situation: take care of yours, he is a symbol of your independence. Independence is independence, but there are conditions under which it will no longer please anyone. After all, sovereignty is not a dogma. And maybe the question is not this way: either you are under Lukashenko, or you are under Moscow. This would be a profitable picture for the Belarusian president. To say: here I am protecting you. The Moscow oligarchs will come here, they will convert you all into serfdom, and those who do not agree will be imprisoned. You see how it is in Russia,” Shulman said.
